With the financial support of the European Commission, the European Policy Centre (EPC) in collaboration with the International Institute for Asian Studies (University of Leiden, Netherlands), the Singapore Institute of International Affairs (SIIA) and the Asia Europe Foundation (ASEF), organizes a series of Brussels Briefings relating to EU-Asian issues generally.
Three of these meetings will deal with subjects related to the agenda of ASEM 8 as it gradually emerges. The objective of these meetings is to foster dialogue on these key issues not only among ASEM members but also with civil society.
Subjects retained are ‘Working for more effective Global Governance’ (how to translate changing global realities, such as the rise of Asia, in international financial and economic institutions) and 'Sustainable Development' (simultaneously achieving economic and social development while ensuring high levels of environmental protection). A third Briefing titled ‘ASEM 8 curtain raiser’, will examine the overall agenda of the ASEM8 Summit.
The purpose of the Brussels Briefings is to raise awareness about EU-Asia relations and more precisely about the key event that ASEM 8 represents in this context.
